THE ABC MODEL of Stress Reduction for Aged Care Staff, Disability Support Staff and Acute Care Staff

A + B = C Model
A = Activating Event …which are the triggers that cause potential stress, this is different for everyone based on individual exposure and experiences.
eg. New job, change in situation, accident, fights, loud sounds, multitasking, criticism,
B = Beliefs…  are thoughts that we learnt as an influence of the environment and people we had exposure to or that we learnt from parents, religion, culture, books, movies, teachers, our own experiences  and what we perceive as what is.. right, wrong, good, bad, worst, best, horrible, shocking etc. Beliefs about that event can be changed to reduce our stress about it.
eg. Belief that I will always have someone at my work place, who can help me rather than… I have no one who can help me
eg. Belief that Life is good, I am in control of my life, I have choices in my life, I can always learn how to get my work done, I am thankful for this job, rather than… Life is so hard, this work is terrible, I have no choices in my life etc
C = Consequences… are the feelings/ emotions that is a result of the activating event and the beliefs about it.
eg. fear, worry, frustration, anger, irritation, hate, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, guilt, shame etc
or the good feelings/emotions that can be changed by changing the beliefs.. like relief, joy, gratitude, love, excitement, contentment, happiness etc
Let us examine the formula A+B=C in our own personal life experiences..
Remember.. there is always someone that you can talk to and seek advice/help as required.
